Teenagers and young adults may be exposed to crystal methamphetamine ('ice')  and other drugs. In Australia, the average age people first start using methamphetamines including ice is around 22 years (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2016 National Drug Strategy Household Survey). Ice has also been gaining popularity and there has been an increase in usage as compared to other forms of methamphetamine.

As a parent, it is important to be equipped with relevant information about ice and other drugs as well as their effects. It’s important to establish open communication with your children, especially if they are teenagers. Supportive relationships, strong communication and clear expectations around drug use are parental factors that protect against drug use and related harms. Assure your child that you are there for them, willing to listen and support them through any problems they may encounter.

If you believe that they may be using ice or some other drug, there are ways to address this. Starting a conversation is one of the most important steps if you believe that they may be experiencing problems or concerns related to ice use.
