Upcoming webinar: Barriers to help-seeking and treatment for women who use methamphetamine

People who use often put off, or delay, seeking help for years. In Australia, women are less likely to be in treatment for methamphetamine use disorder. But why is this? This Cracks in the Ice webinar will explore:

  • Methamphetamine use disorder,
  • Explore the findings of novel treatment study for women in methamphetamine withdrawal,
  • Barriers to help-seeking for women who use methamphetamine and the reasons they exist.

This 1-hour free webinar will be held on Thursday 1st May (12pm -1pm AEST). Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A session which will discuss possible next steps for this research along with questions from webinar attendees. This webinar will be relevant for health workers, health workers, researchers, people who use methamphetamine, family and community members.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Associate Professor Shalini Arunogiri is a clinical addiction psychiatrist and researcher. She is the Acting Executive Clinical Director of the Hamilton Centre - Victorian Statewide Centre for Addiction and Mental Health at Turning Point, and Associate Professor at Monash University. She is Chair of the RANZCP Faculty of Addiction Psychiatry, an elected board member and training officer for the International Society of Addiction Medicine, and NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellow at Monash Addiction Research Centre. Shalini is a passionate advocate for clinician-researchers in mental health and addiction and enjoys mentoring health professionals in advancing their research careers.

Dr Sarah Catchlove is an early career researcher (BSc (Psychology/ Psychophysiology), First Class Hons.; PhD) proficient in cognitive neuroscience, clinical trial design and project management, neuroimaging and biostatistical analysis, and with considerable industry expertise. Sarah currently oversees several NHMRC- and MRFF- funded clinical trials investigating innovative pharmacological treatments for substance use disorders and associated comorbidities, managing a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and research staff.

Jenny Valentish is the author of the book Woman of Substances: A Journey Into Addiction and Treatment (Black Inc, 2017). As a journalist she has written about drug law reform, drug treatment and psychedelic psychotherapy for The Guardian, The Age, The Saturday Paper and the ABC. She served on the board of SMART Recovery Australia for five years, was an ambassador for Monash University’s BrainPark, and her consultancy and editing work has included clients such as INPUD, Cracks in the Ice and Turning Point. Jenny has held ‘write your story’ workshops for peer workers and clients via SANDA, NADA, QNADA and Turning Point, and as an AOD media trainer has run workshops for people with lived experience, through Unharm, Smart Recovery International and Uniting Church’s Fair Treatment. She has been a keynote speaker at DAPAANZ Cutting Edge and NADA, QNADA Winter School and Australian & New Zealand Addiction Conference, and has chaired many webinars for the AOD sector.
