Summary: These guidelines provide guidance on how to make non-government organisation (NGO) alcohol and other drug (AOD) services culturally appropriate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Guidelines are not intended to replace the provision of culturally appropriate services from specialist Aboriginal AOD services or community-controlled healthcare services but to improve the cultural appropriateness of mainstream services.

The guidelines cover the following topics:

  1. Creating a welcoming environment
  2. Service delivery
  3. Voice of the community
  4. Engagement with Aboriginal organisations and workers
  5. Capable staff
  6. Organisation’s responsibilities
